Description
Absolut Elyx is a rarity in the world of luxury Vodka – a handmade wheat based vodka, finished and catalyzed in copper stills (more on that later), with all the wheat sourced entirely from one farm. The farm in this case is Råbelöf Estate, a 600 year old castle in a small town two hours from Copenhagen (that’s the Swedish capital in case you didn’t know). And yes it’s gorgeous.
Most vodka produced by manufacturers the scale of Absolut are made using computers. This one actually still needs humans to hammer away and turn knobs and such. The handmade element is definitely something new to this level of vodka. And while vodka production typically uses stainless steel column stills with copper plates, this one is finished in a much smaller still made entirely of copper.
So what’s the big deal with copper? Well, copper tends to attract away sulphuric elements from distilled spirits. These sulphuric elements are what give vodka a harshness. Elyx ends up with a silky texture and taste thanks in large part to this Copper Catalyztion process.
Krister Asplund, the master distiller, and his team have produced a landmark vodka for Absolut and the luxury Vodka category in general. Definitely worth a try!
